It also casts doubt on Moscow’s claims that Russia has annexed the eastern Ukrainian city. “As of today, Bakhmut is not occupied by Russia,” Zelensky said, answering a journalist’s question about the city’s status at a meeting of the G-7 grouping in Hiroshima, Japan. Earlier, Zelensky confirmed that Russia had recaptured the town of Bakhmut after eight months of bloody fighting, saying that “today Bakhmut is only in our hearts”. Russia’s Defense Ministry had claimed that its private army ‘Wagner’ had captured the city of Bakhmut in Ukraine with the help of Russian troops.
