PM Modi Egypt Visit | PM Modi meets his Egyptian counterpart, top ministers, discussed strengthening business ties
PTI Photo Cairo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM Modi) discussed strengthening economic ties between the two countries in his first meeting with the ‘India Unit’ in Egypt. The ‘India Unit’ is a group of top Egyptian ministers headed by Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly. Prime Minister Modi reached Egypt this afternoon after a three-day visit to the US. Seven members of the Egyptian cabinet, headed by Madbouly, were present at the meeting with Modi. Modi thanked Egypt for setting up a dedicated high-level India unit and appreciated the government’s stand. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted, “Discussed on deepening cooperation in a number of areas including trade and investment, renewable energy, green hydrogen, information technology, digital transaction platform, medicine and people-to-people contacts.” Significantly, Egypt is the most important trading partner of India in the African continent. This is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Egypt in the last 26 years. In a special gesture, Egyptian Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouli welcomed Modi with a hug at the airport here. Prime Minister Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome and given a ‘guard of honour’ upon his arrival. May India-Egypt relations flourish and bring benefits to the peoples of our countries. The Prime Minister was greeted by members of the Indian community raising the Indian tricolor and raising slogans of ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ when he arrived at the hotel here. Modi was welcomed with the popular song ‘Sholay’ An Egyptian woman dressed in a saree welcomed Modi by singing the popular song ‘Yeh dosti hum nahi todenge’ from the film ‘Sholay’. The Prime Minister appeared to listen attentively to the woman and expressed surprise when the woman said she knew very little Hindi and had never been to India. Modi to visit Al-Hakim mosque Modi will also visit the 11th-century Al-Hakim mosque, restored with the help of the Dawoodi Bohra community, on Sunday. The mosque was built during the rule of the Fatimid dynasty. The Bohra community in India actually originated from the Fatimid dynasty and they renovated the mosque from the 1970s. PM to visit ‘Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery’ During his stay in Cairo, the Prime Minister will visit the ‘Heliopolis Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery’, a sacred site dedicated to Indians who served and died in Egypt and Palestine during World War I. There is a memorial built in the memory of about 3,799 soldiers of the army. (with language input)
