An eyewitness told NHK Public Television that a woman collapsed while being chased by the suspect. The suspect then stabbed and shot two police officers when they arrived at the scene in Nakano City, Nagano Prefecture. According to NHK, two police officers also died after the death of the woman. Kyodo news agency reported that a fourth person who was injured could not be saved because he was near the place where the suspect was hiding. Witnesses reported that a miscreant carrying a rifle and knife was hiding inside a building. Giving a description of the suspect, the police said that he was wearing a cap and glasses and his face was covered with a mask. He is absconding and city officials have urged residents of the area to stay in their homes.
