The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday night upheld the arrest of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan as “legal”, saying that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has completed all legal formalities while making the arrest. The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday summoned top officials and police officers after former Pakistan Prime Minister Khan was dramatically arrested from the court premises in a corruption case. However, he had reserved his decision in this matter. Islamabad High Court (IHC) Chief Justice Amir Farooq took cognizance of the arrest by the paramilitary Rangers. Arrested. The arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan (70) came a day after the powerful army accused him of leveling baseless allegations against a senior ISI official. The High Court summoned various officers and heard arguments on the merits of the arrest and whether or not it was legal to arrest any person present inside the court. The Chief Justice had reserved the decision after hearing the case. The Chief Justice initially ordered the Home Secretary, the Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IG) and other officials to respond about the arrests within 15 minutes. The Chief Justice said he was showing “restraint” in the matter. The judge warned of summoning the prime minister if the Islamabad police chief failed to appear. Justice Farooq said, “Come to the court and tell us why and in what case Imran has been arrested.” Also read IG Akbar Nasir Khan duly appeared in the court and said that Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in an alleged corruption case. Khan’s counsel Faisal Chowdhary told the court that the PTI chief was illegally arrested when he was present inside the court to record his biometric attendance. Another lawyer for Khan, Barrister Gauhar Khan, claimed that during his arrest, Khan was hit on the head with an iron rod. Also, his leg got hurt. (agency)
