The officers provided this information. According to the US Geological Survey, the tremors were felt near the southern coastal city of Jeremy. The epicenter was located at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers) from the surface. “I felt the whole house collapse on me,” Eric Mpitabakana, an official with the World Food Program in Jeremy, told The Associated Press by phone. Frankel Maginière, an official with Haiti’s civil protection agency in Jérémy, told the AP that the bodies of three people were found buried under the rubble of a collapsed house where rescuers were searching for more people. He said that due to the earthquake, many children got injured due to panic and running and they were admitted to the hospital. In 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, the densely populated capital of Haiti, killing at least two million people and causing widespread damage to many buildings. (agency)
