Ouagadougou/Burkina Faso: Islamic extremists attacked the army in the eastern part of the West African country of Burkina Faso, killing 33 soldiers and wounding a dozen others. The army gave this information on Friday. According to an army statement, the attack took place on Thursday in the Gourma province of Ouagaru. “During the fighting, the soldiers resolutely faced the overwhelming number of enemies and killed 40 jihadists,” the statement said. Fighters affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have waged a violent insurgency in Burkina Faso for the past seven years, killing thousands and displacing nearly two million.
