File Photo Delhi: LIC has simplified the rules for making insurance claims for the victims of Cyclone Biparjoy. The cyclonic storm that hit the coast of Gujarat has caused huge destruction in the state. At the same time, its effect is being seen in Maharashtra and Rajasthan. In such a situation, this step of LIC will benefit a large population. The storm formed in the Arabian Sea hit the Gujarat coast on 15 June. This has caused huge damage to people’s property and infrastructure in many states. IRDAI gave instructions to insurance companies Insurance regulator IRDAI has given relief to the people affected by cyclone Biparjoy. Insurance companies have been directed to settle claims in the storm-affected states at the earliest. In a circular addressed to CEOs of all general insurers and health insurers, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has said that all claims should be investigated promptly and claim payments should be made at the earliest. IRDAI said, ‘Insurance companies shall encourage the policyholder to make maximum use of electronic communication for correspondence while making claims and filing all relevant documents. Efforts will be made to ensure that as far as possible digital processes are used for assessment of claims. Cyclone Biparajoy is expected to cause major damage to infrastructure including property (homes and businesses) in several states. The regulator has asked insurers to mobilize all resources to ensure prompt service response. Special Counter This includes the services of investigators, surveyors and loss adjusters for speedy settlement of claims of the affected people after the cyclone. The circular states that the insurance companies shall assist the claimants through their 24×7 helpline, special claim counters at district level for speedy processing and claim settlement with claim settlement teams. A statement from LIC said that nodal officers have been appointed at the circle level to make insurance claims easily accessible to the public. These officers will contact the Chief Secretaries of the State Governments, concerned officers.
