According to its legend, there was a hunter named Chitrabhanu. He used to feed his family by killing animals. He was indebted to a moneylender, but could not repay his loan on time. The enraged moneylender took the hunter captive in Shivmath.

Incidentally, that day was Shivratri. The hunter kept meditating and listening to religious things related to Shiva. On Chaturdashi Chaturdashi, he also heard the story of Shivratri fast, Shivratri Katha. In the evening, the moneylender called him to him and talked about repaying the loan. The hunter was released from bondage the next day by promising to repay the entire loan. Like his daily routine, he went out for hunting in the forest. But due to being in the prison house for the whole day, he was troubled by hunger and thirst. He went far in search of prey.

When it got dark, he thought that he would have to spend the night in the forest. The forest waited for the night to pass by climbing a bael tree on the bank of a pond. Under the Bilva tree there was a Shivling which was covered with Bilva leaves. Hunter could not find the person The twigs he plucked while making the halt, accidentally fell on the Shivling. In this way, the fasting of the hungry and thirsty hunter was also done throughout the day and Bilva leaves were also placed on the Shivling. After one night passed, a pregnant deer reached the pond to drink water.

As soon as the hunter drew an arrow on the bow, the deer said – ‘I am pregnant. I will give birth soon. You will kill two living beings at once, which is not right. I will soon present before you after giving birth to a child, then kill me.’ The hunter loosened the line and the deer disappeared into the wild bushes. While offering and loosening the thread, some Bilva leaves accidentally broke and fell on the Shivling. In this way, the worship of the first Prahar was also completed unknowingly from him.

After a while another deer came out from there. The hunter was over the moon. After coming close, he put the bow on the arrow. Then seeing him the deer humbly requested – ‘O hunter! I retired from the season a while back. I am passionate. I am wandering in search of my beloved. I will come to you soon after meeting my husband.’ The hunter let him go as well

He was perturbed over losing his prey twice. He was in all sort of thoughts. It was the last hour of the night. This time also some Bel leaves fell on the Shivling after being attached to the bow and the worship of the second Prahar was also completed. Then another deer came out with her children. It was a golden opportunity for the hunter. He did not take long to shoot arrows at the bow. He was about to release the arrow when the deer said – ‘O hunter! I will return these children after handing them over to their father. Don’t kill me this time.’

The hunter laughed and said- ‘Let me leave the prey that came in front, I am not such a fool. I have lost my victim twice before. My children must be suffering from hunger and thirst. In reply, the deer said again – Just as you are harassing your children’s love, so is me. O hunter! Trust me, I promise to leave them with their father and return immediately. Hearing the sad voice of the deer, the hunter felt pity on him. He let that chicken escape too

In the absence of prey and hungry and thirsty, the hunter was unknowingly sitting on the vine-tree, breaking the vine leaves and throwing them down. When the dawn came, a strong deer came on the same path. The hunter thought that he would surely hunt it. Seeing the trunk of the hunter, the deer said in a humble voice – ‘O hunter! If you have killed three deer and small children who came before me, then do not delay in killing me too, so that I may not have to suffer for a moment in their separation. I am the husband of those deer. If you have given life to them, then please give me life for a few moments too. I will meet him and appear before you.’

On hearing the deer, the whole night’s cycle turned in front of the hunter. He narrated the whole story to the deer. Then the deer said – ‘The way my three wives have gone with a promise, they will not be able to follow their religion after my death. So just as you left him as a confidant, let me go too. I will appear before you soon with all of them.’ The hunter let him go as well Thus morning came.

The worship of Shivaratri was completed unknowingly due to fasting, night-jagaran and belpatra on Shivling. But he got the result of the worship done unknowingly.

The hunter’s violent heart became purified. The divine power resided in him. After a while, the deer appeared before the family hunter so that he could hunt them, but seeing such truthfulness, sattvikta and collective love spirit of wild animals, the hunter felt very guilty. He gave life to the deer family. Inadvertently following the fast of Shivratri, the hunter attained salvation and Shivlok. Such is the glory of the monthly Shivratri fast.
